Biography

After celebrating her professional debut as Carmen in her hometown of Zagreb, Jelena joined the Young Ensemble of the Semperoper Dresden in 2015. During her time at this prestigious house, she performed a variety of important roles including Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro), Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Orlofsky, Hänsel, and Janáček's Fox.

In 2017, she became a member of the ensemble at Staatstheater Braunschweig, where she made acclaimed debuts as Sesto (La clemenza di Tito) and Charlotte (Werther), and returned to the title role in Carmen. A year later, she joined the ensemble of Nationaltheater Mannheim, where she continued to expand her repertoire with roles such as Charlotte, Adalgisa, Carmen, Octavian, Preziosilla, and most recently, Komponist.
Guest engagements have taken Jelena to leading stages across Europe and beyond, including Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf (Hänsel und Gretel), Opera Cologne (Carmen), Forum Ludwigsburg, Guadalajara Teatro Dellogado, Concertgebouw Amsterdam (Elektra), Latvian National Opera Riga (Nabucco), and the Luxembourg Philharmonic (Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. In 2018, she was invited by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra to perform the role of Doma in Jakov Gotovac's Ero the Joker, Croatia’s most celebrated opera. A complete recording of the performance was released to critical acclaim.

Highlights of the 2021/22 season included her role debut as Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier) at the Lithuanian National Theatre in Vilnius in a new production by Damiano Michieletto, and Empress Caesonia in Detlev Glanert’s Caligula at the Nationaltheater Weimar. She also recorded orchestral songs by Croatian composer Dora Pejačević with the Zagreb Radio Symphony Orchestra — an ensemble with which she frequently collaborates — and performed Verdi’s Requiem under the baton of Plácido Domingo.

In 2022, she began her journey into the German dramatic repertoire, debuting as Fricka in Wagner’s Das Rheingold and Die Walküre in Nationaltheater Mannheim’s Ring cycle, conducted by Alexander Soddy. These performances were later reprised at the Daegu Opera Festival in South Korea as part of the company’s international tour.

In autumn 2023, Jelena appeared as Wellgunde in Das Rheingold at Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, part of Romeo Castellucci’s new Ring cycle conducted by Alain Altinoglu. That same season, she sang Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with the UNAM Philharmonic in Mexico City and took on the role of Le Prince Charmant in Massenet’s Cendrillon at the National Taichung Theater in Taiwan.
She also returned to the Lithuanian National Theatre in Vilnius to debut as Nicklausse in a new production of Les contes d’Hoffmann.

Jelena ended last season with another important milestone: as Amneris in Verdi’s Aida. She began the current season with another major Verdi role, Princess Eboli in Don Carlo, at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Vilnius, where she will also appear as Hermia in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. On the concert platform, she performed Mendelssohn’s Ein Sommernachtstraum with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony at the Alte Oper Frankfurt, conducted by Maestro Alain Altinoglu. Her forthcoming engagements include two major role debuts: Venus in Wagner’s Tannhäuser and Judith in Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle.

Jelena continues to develop her artistry and vocal technique through collaboration with esteemed mentors, including Dolora Zajick, Deborah Polaski, Elena Pankratova, and Ruža Pospiš-Baldani.

Reviews

Stefan Dettlinger Mannheimer Morgen

Jelena Kordić is a brilliant Knight of the Rose, as elegant on stage as she is vocally assured. Accustomed to cross-dressing roles, the Croatian mezzo nonetheless asserts a conquering femininity as Mariandel.

Katharina Koser Mannheimer Morgen

Steffan M. Dettlinger Mannheimer Morgen

Steffan M. Dettlinger Mannheimer Morgen
